In 1871 there were only two counties in what is now known as North Dakota. Renville County was part of a great territory known as Buffalo Country, and the Red River area was known as Pembina. In 1872 the territorial legislature made further divisions. It created Rolette, Bottineau, McHenry, Stevens, Mountrail, Williams and Wallette Counties. |
